Wines From Four Regions Where I've Lived In The States

It's the Rioja Wine bar tweet up time again today, number 6 to be precise, hard to believe there have been six tweet ups since I first came to Greensboro. I'll be at the wine bar with friends chatting with Sue Polinsky of ConvergeSouth at 6:00pm tonight, Sue will be talking about the event, its history, and how event marketing can be propelled by social media. ConvergeSouth is on Oct 1-2, 2010 and tickets start at $10.

A new friend who is leaving us for the city of Cleavland, Ohio is Tammy Colson. Tammy is into wine in a big way, and dispenses advice on what is good to drink so in honor of the Rioja tweet up I thought I'd get her insights.

We recently had the opporunity to sit down and chat about social media and wine. Upon heading our separate ways, I thought it would be cool to ask Tammy what wine would be good drink from each of the regions I've lived in here in the states. Here's Tammy's opinion:

CA wine: Pierano Vineyards – The Other (red) *

Worthy – Sophia's Cuvee (made by Axios) *

Northwest Wine: Emerson Vineyards (Oregon) – Pinot Noir *

Willamette Valley Vineyards – Estate Pinot Noir *

New England: Dr. Frank Winery Dry Riesling, Finger Lakes, NY

NC: Grove Winery – Merlot *

Hanover Park – Mourvedre or Chambourcin

VA: Chrysalis Winery – Norton

Breaux Vineyards - Nebbiolo

Tammy: I drink wines from all over the world, but I have become partial to American wines. And not because they are “drink now” quality, but because the United States has been making good wine for more than a few years now, and that should be recognized. These are a few of my favorites, wines I go back to over and over, because they are good. Any of them will age in a wine cellar for several years, so I recommend buying one for now, and one to put up for a while.

There are a few things any wine drinker should know:

  • try to find out which varietal an area is known for. Taste that wine. Its the one that most wineries in a region are “getting good at”.
  • You may not like these wines. That's ok, there's nothing wrong with you, and there's nothing wrong with me. As always, drink what you like, and be willing to try a wine you've never had with an open mind. You never know what you'll find.

Happy Sipping!

* I have been able to find is wine in local Greensboro stores.
