Facebook Tops Social Media Followers Amongst US Grocery Chains

The number of Grocery Social Media followers in the US, that's a topic we recently decided to tackle at my company Pace Communications. We are interested in how chains conduct shopper marketing using content and social media. We designed an infographic based on a research project conducted in May. You can click on the embedded infographic in this post to see all the numbers below.

Facebook is the big winner then it comes to the number of followers for the Grocery Chain industry.

Why is Facebook the big social networking site for Grocery Chains in the US?

Well, there are a lot of people on Facebook in the US, and over 500 million worldwide, being the biggest social network helps.

Twitter does appear to be the second most popular social media site for US Grocery stores, and except for one or two stores, US Grocery stores typically have more Facebook followers than Twitter followers.

One notable exception is Wholefoods, and the difference is between Twitter followers for the company and Facebook is very big. Not only does Wholefoods have more twitter followers than any other grocery store, at 1.7 million followers but Wholefoods has more Twitter followers than the rest of the top industry sites put together.

Only when you look at Facebook followers do you get near any where near the sort of following amongst grocery stores, both Target and Walmart have over 1 million followers.

Interestingly Wholefoods has about 250k followers on Facebook.

If you were entering into social media tomorrow as a Grocery Chain for the first time, I'd have to recommend Facebook given the competitive landscape.
