Subscribing To Content In E-Readers & The iPad

Interesting article about newspaper subsidized e-readers from Bill Mitchell at the Poynter Institute. He suggests newspapers should subsidize the cost of the new iPad to reduce their posts and in the process help newspapers make the transition from print to electronic.

Mario Garcia commented on the post: "Newspapers need to become app developers, offering a family of apps developed around their brand, their data and resources, and with more recurring revenue possibilities that are not tied solely to advertising, which is another reason why subsidizing part of the cost of the iPad makes sense."

For me what's significant about this post is the changing nature of subscription; consumers are more prepared to pay for content and applications on mobile devices. Question is; does the new iPad help with that process or hinder when you can also easily browse the web and the experience is closer to a laptop? I think the answer lies in small payments, offering freemium apps and content, with premium options.
