Engagement marketing is the marketing process where communicators understand the biggest opportunities lie in creating a word of mouth campaign with their social contacts. In both private communities and open communications such as twitter and blogging a company develops a community management process for building relationships with their customers, evangelists and advocates. As a result of those social media relationships companies can get the word out about products, their brand, and services when individuals share information in their owned media.
I'm convinced content marketing and inbound marketing are merely stepping stones to engagement marketing. You might develop really good content, but without relationships in the wider community you will not succeed in getting your ideas and content into the multitude of personal media available on the web. Yes, you can pitch bloggers and social media citizens, but the efficiency of pitching an entire market does not produce the ROI it once did when there were a few traditional media outlets. Instead being part of a wider community where you are engaged with your peers’ content, will get your content read and discussed. Companies will have to hire the people, develop the processes for listening, triaging and response to ensure effective community management. Look at Dell, Starbucks and Comcast for good examples of effective engagement marketing.
Do you agree? Do you disagree? How do you think the industry will develop in terms of using engagement marketing in 2010? And what will social CRM do for engagement marketing? What are the opportunities and the impediments for engagement marketing crossing the chasm in 2010?
Email me or better yet write a post and I’ll include a quote or link in my forthcoming post as I develop a list of predictions and perspectives on the evolving nature of engagement marketing.
