What's The Future Of The Practice Of Marketing

Richard Michie answered my question on linkedin.com about the future of marketing with this answer:
"I think it'll be pretty much the same as now. After all the point of marketing is to interact with our customers who are always going to be humans. The technology will no doubt change but that basic premise of getting people to buy into whatever you are marketing will stay the same."
That's a compelling and worthy answer one to my liking because it points to strategy rather than the latest hoopla technology publicized in the press. However, I now think I want to ask the narrow question about the profession of marketing and its practice, do you think marketers and marketing departments are as good as they could be, and what does the future hold for the practice of marketing?
