Flickr Uses Its Data To Find Its Members Most Popular Cameras
February 20, 2007
Social media is all about participation; members of a community contribute their content, and comment on other people’s content. Flickr is one such social media site where members upload their photographic images; members organize the images within community groups and also tag the images (Tagging is the process of assigning a keyword to a topic, object or in the case of Flickr an image).
Flickr's Camera Finder page does something else with all of the data amassed by its members, the page provides graphs that show the number of Flickr members who have uploaded at least one photo with a particular camera on a given day over the last year.
Flickr provides three graphs: Most popular cameras in the Flickr community, popular point and shoot cameras and popular cameraphones.
The data managers at Flickr are able to detect the type of camera in about 2/3rds of the time when a Flickr member uploads an image.
