Karen Christensen is mapping the social media landscape. After reviewing the blogosphere and literature, Karen was dissatisfied with how people described social media technologies. She provides four descriptions of how social media is organized, and hopes the attempt will make it easier to remember and explain:
Knowledge management
Collaboration
Relationship management
Entertainment
Karen's placed second life in the entertainment category I believe. I'd actually disagree with her partly. If SL fulfills its promise, it is more about collaboration and relationship management. Though entertainment is definitely important.
