I am back after a trip to the UK; the news was full of England and Australia playing the Ashes. A cricket tournament from the 19th century, England has not won for over 20 years and they beat Australia this week. England had gone Cricket mad and there was a huge upswing in interest in the game. I tried to purchase several cricket balls, but could only find one in Stockport town center.
The other big news item was high petrol prices and reported gas shortages at a number of stations in the area. Several truck drivers were going to blockade the refineries in protest at the high prices.
Lastly, there was coverage of Hurricane Katrina and the Government’s efforts to handle the disaster.
