Darren's point about when in doubt don't post a comment, in connection with the Corante incident is well taken. I am also thinking trackbacks are the appropriate way to handle the issue, and its a matter of me providing better direction to my team.
"In short, if there's any doubt that you're commenting inappropriately, then don't. Email the blogger instead."
Darren I do think it’s a shame that you turned off commenting due to all of the comment Spam. With your comment system are you able to moderate your comment posts? It almost defeats the purpose of blogging. I used this feature on Moveable type when I worked at 48hourprint.com. We were getting lots of porn and drug comment Spam posts. A bit of a hassle to monitor but effective. Also for my own personal blog PR Communications I turned off the html functionality in comments and that has stopped a lot of spam bots.
