What does it mean to promote social media? This is a question that I've been thinking about ever since Sunday when I saw C.C. Chapman's presentation about social media at Podcamp Boston. I thought he did a good job of explaining why he is involved in social media and what social media has done for him. He brought the benefits of social media to the personal, by describing his personal experiences with social media and what the benefits have been for him from social media over the years.
I don't often talk about this on my blog. But the biggest benefit of blogging for me is that the blog is a learning tool. There’s this constant dynamic to create content, mainly for myself, but also for an audience. And in the process of content creation I often have to learn something new. I conduct research, or interview people. Also, if you want to learn about social media, there's nothing better than getting involved with the technology.
My personal passion for marketing, how marketing is a listening process, is what gets me to return to blogs and social media time and time again. Marketing to me is all about listening in order to make a better product at a profit. Social media can be an effective tool for listening to customers and the wider market, through direct conversations or wider online media measurement.
If you are thinking of getting involved with social media, find something you have a passion for, and want to develop over time, a hobby, profession, or pastime, if you dedicate the time and the effort you will grow your knowledge, and in the process develop a wider reputation.
